i have an lt1 and a t-56 im putting in. the starter on the lt1 is mounted on the engine, and doesnt (as far as i can tell) interfear with the transmission at all. the tube on the top i believe is for the dipstick. one of the sensors is a speed sensor. u may need to look at a wiring diamgram for a 4th gen

ok.....a t-56 does not have a dipstick!
the tube is just a vent.
the starter mounts just like any other sbc starter does....to the block.
the sensor on the passenger side is the back-up light switch.
the one at the top center is the skip-shift solenoid which wouldn't be used if put into a 3rd gen unless doing a LT1 swap also.
the one at the shifter mount is your reverse lock-out.
the small one near the back is you vss.
there is an article i believe it is in the FAQ forum that has all this info and then some. really good article.
