Flywheel question

Im new to flywheels..

What would perform better? Would a heavier steel flywheel (30lbs) or a lightweight aluminum flywheel (15lbs) perform best?

Would a certain weight perform better for any type of engine? or would it vary..say a stock 305 vs a HO 383.. would light be good for one and not the other, or same?

Thanks.

Re: Flywheel question

I only run lightweight flywheels on race engines that I'm trying to rev up really, really fast, like a stock car engine.

Whatever flywheel you run, it needs to be balanced to the engine. If you just take yours off and bolt a lightweight piece on, you can kiss your balancing goodbye. You will have weird vibrations just for a start...

I prefer the heavier units because I like durability. Also, with high compression, it helps if you have a heavier piece pulling on the crank to get it over the compression stroke.

Re: Flywheel question

sbc are internally balanced. Trust me, it still matters if you drop a light weight flywheel onto your stock engine.
