hi i got a 85 camaro, and a t56 i will be putting in soon. i want to change the pinion and gears. wats a good choose maybe 3.42 or is that to much 4 the highway?? is this something i should pay someone to do, i can install trans, never messed with gears tho.

 

4.10s are nice for the double overdrive of the T56.
Pay someone to do it, it's cheaper than buying all the tools and doing it yourself, unless you plan on doing gear swaps again in the future.

 

With 3.42's and a T56, you'll never get into 6th gear unless you're going 90 MPH. With 3.73's, you'll get into 6th gear around 75-80. With 4.10's you'll get into 6th gear around 65-70. But on the street with 4.10's you'll be in 4th gear and doing 35 MPH.

 

If you have the 94-97 T56, go with 4.10's. 3.42 gears are what come stock on the 94-02 T56 F-body's.
With the 3.42's 6th gear is used only for maintaining your speed (55-70mph) on the highway and has absolutely no pull at all.
