ATF In Rear End?

A buddy told me to drain some of the rear end fluid out of my 92 camaro with the 3.1 and replace it with a little bit of Automatic Tranny Fluid. He said it would basically clean it out. Drive it a few miles and then drain all of it out and replace all the fluid. Does this sound like it would work or hurt it? Also is there a drain plug for the rear end?

Re: ATF In Rear End?

sure if you want to buy ann new crap. Gear oil is so cheap just buy a few quarts and change it, there is a plug on the passenger side near the axle tube it is a standard 1/2 in socket wrench size

I would just pull the cover, and permatex a new seal back on, this gives you better access to dig all the crud out of the pinion area with your fingers and smell real nice.

its a piece of cake, you can change it in about 30 mins, 45 with a good cleaning to the coverplate.

well ATF is very thin. I would be worried about proper lubrication ever for such a short time. I suggest just putting in a good quality gear fluid after cleaning the case out. I have not heard of anyone flushing out a rear end before.

Why would it be dirty in the first place?

Re: ATF In Rear End?

Not a good idea. It does not contain the right additives for that type of gears.

As far as "cleaning out", the only thing that should be in there, besides grease, is metal dust. ATF won't dissolve that any better than gear lube. It's not like the sludge in an engine, which ATF WILL work magic on.
