700R4 Transmission Problems

700R4 Transmission Problems
I was driving down the interstate last night coming home from duty. I was in the right lane, and there was a slow car infront of me so I got into the left lane and gave it some gas to get around the slow car, well when the car downshifted, the transmission made a god awful noise, and now whenever the transmission is in overdrive, all the engine does is rev, the car won't move at all. And when I put it in drive it goes, but the transmission isn't sounding great at all. The fluid looks good and it is at the right levels, so I'm guessing something inside broke, the car has almost 180,000 miles on it, so I can't say I didn't see it coming. I'm just wondering if I should get it rebuilt, or if I should buy a used one and replace it. I found one on craigslist that came out of a 92 camaro it has 80,000 miles on it, and the seller said it was in perfect condition when it was removed. So what do you think the best option is? Any help is greatly appreciated, I don't know much about transmissions so this is something new for me. Thanks for the help.

i got my 700 custom built, and was worth every $$$$, its built for the strip, but it will burn em going into second everytime. but it seems like you got a good life out of yours!!!, you can expect to spend atleast 700 to have it rebuilt, just make sure its someone good who stands behind it and NOT Aamco Trans!!!

Re: 700R4 Transmission Problems
I would say go and rebuild. the husband and i here have an extra 700r4 for sale that came off of a salvage engine that is in his car right now. that tranny has been rebuilt. sometimes it's better to have them rebuilt then trying to find another. i'd say rebuild it.
good luck,
