I have a 92 rs 305 automatic w/175,000 miles, I believe the tranny is a 700r4 or a hydramatic 4L60, it's all oem anyway.

The problem is that i was leaking tranny fluid near the front of the tranny for a while, but i kept fluid in it, sometimes it would get really low & not shift into 2nd when it was cold out, but if i put more fluid in, it would shift just fine.

It got down to 30 degrees yesterday & the tranny would not shift into 2nd, it just stays in first. The first gear & reverse work just fine, but i can only go 19 mph in first gear, then the engine just revs.

Also it's full of fluid & now it doesnt leak anymore.

It just stopped working before i had a chance to fix the leak.

Anyone have any idea what may have caused it just to stop shifting?

 

The governor gear is trashed and it's time to get a new one. They are very cheap. You can probably get a new gear and cover for under $30. Hope that helps.
