Driven Gear Problems

Well, when I purchased my car, the speedo did not work. I found that it was the driven gear on the transmission had gotten chewed up pretty bad. I replaced it about 3 months before I stopped driving the car for the winter (probably put 2,000 miles on the gear).

Today I took the tail of my transmission off and found that once again, the driven gear is chewed up pretty bad (went from convex to concave teeth). I know this can not be normal and at $40 a pop, I can't afford to go through two or three a year.

Is there any reason for this? The driving gear in the tranny seems to be in good shape. The car did jam into gear all the time. I would put it in any no load to load (park to drive) gear and it would pause for about a second and then jump. Could this be the problem?

I am installing a new transmission (used, but in good shape) but I am going to use the tail from my transmission because the new tranny is an electronic speed sensor and I am not sure if I can mount the gear style sensor to it.

Any help would be appreciated

You can swap one for the other. Check Pat Hall's comments in the following link:

Re: Driven Gear Problems

The trans, and jamming into gear, and all that, isn't really connected with why your speedo gear gets destroyed.

What eats speedo gears is friction in the speedo cable, cruise module, or the speedo itself. Those are all the things that the speedo gears drive.

Lube your cables, and check the cruise regulator to see if it has excessive friction.

The lower cable is easiest to lube; unscrew it from the cruise and the trans, pull the center out, soak it in solvent for a little while, squirt some carb cleaner or brake cleaner down the housing while spinning the center until lots of gunk runs out the bottom, then pull the center outand let it dry and shoot some compressed air through the housing to dry it, and smear a thin layer of speedo cable lube or white lithium grease on it from end to end and put it back together.

The upper works the same way but you have to pull the cluster out to do that one. Be careful as it's easy to get foul stuff in the car's interior.

If the cruise is the problem, you'll have to replace it; Google "speedometer repair" or "cruise control repair", and see if you can find a shop to either send yours to or buy another from.

Re: Driven Gear Problems

The fix would be the same; however, it's possible that the cable is a one-piece (cluster to trans).

Re: Driven Gear Problems

Thanks for the advice, I will definitely do that when I put it all back together. It will be super easy since my car is completely apart at the moment. Do I need to put some grease on the speedometer where the cable connects to it?

Kind of off topic, but does a part of the cruise control system hook into the speedometer cable? I do not currently have cruise and am trying to put one in so I am trying to find out everything I can about how it works.

JamesC,
My transmission and the new one I am putting in are both 700R4s. Would any of the T5 information still be applicable to mine? Some good info there, just want to make sure it is the same for mine. Also, do you know if there is a difference between a v6 and v8 700R4? I thought that they were the same, but the one that came from a 305 is a fair amount heavier for some reason.

Thanks

No.

Depends. Mine doesn't. You'll have to look.

Sorry about the mix up, I was thinking you had a T-5--no experience with the 700R4's.
