Gear ratios

Ok so I hat 2.73 gears in my 1991 firebird, went to 3.42 gears and they crapped out on me, maybe I just installed them poorly... anyways I didnt notice a whole lot of difference between the ratios, which I think is odd. Anyone recommend a ratio for me?

Engine is almost completely stock
-8.8mm wires
-high perf. dist cap and rotor...
-3" exhaust to cat

transmission is 700r4, stock... I'm new at tranny/axle work so I need your opinions. Thanks!!
