What Size Gears Should I Go With

modified 305 TBI, drag strip built 700R4....... and of course the cruddy 2.73 single tire fire............... going with an Eaton or Aubrun LSD unit but was wondering what was a good gear size to go with, i still want to cruise at 75MPH at a good RPM, i turn about 1900 - 2000 @ 70 now in fourth, want to stick around 2500 @ 70 , that would leave me with a good RPM at 75-80 anyway thanks for any help

Re: What Size Gears Should I Go With

If your car is mostly a street cruiser, I'd recommend 3.42's. If you're more concerned about the quarter mile or light to light racing on the street, maybe step up to 3.73's. Either of these gear choices will keep you in the area of 2500 rpms at 70 mph. 3.73's are a bit much for a daily driver in most cases.

Re: What Size Gears Should I Go With

Id say 3.73, keeping it street you wont lose gas mileage, some actually gained from what ive heard, top mph wont decrease becuase youll be able to wind out overdrive further and when you wanna let it loose itll take care of shooting you off pretty hard, all around good choice in my book. Itll make your car feel a hell of a lot lighter.

Re: What Size Gears Should I Go With

yea its way to high of gears now, i been 140 MPH according to the GPS, but its so sluggish up there, and low rpm, id like for my to speed to be about 145, any more is to much, heck 140 is to much but if i want to play i can and it has to be faster top end than my honda and it will do every bit of 140 easy, damn them japs and their smart motors, it an 05 accord vtec v6 5 speed auto...... dont know if i will get the best of both worlds but it HAS to be faster off the line!!! i had a 9.6 on the 1/8th

Re: What Size Gears Should I Go With

I run 4.11 and cruise 75mph right around 2700-2800 rpm its perfect on the highway and around town
and i run a 25.7in tire. 275/40/17 BFG drag radial

I agree with Pat. I would not suggest anything taller then the 342's in a daily driver. This gear is a great mix for the weekend warrior, with excellent acceleration and cruising ability

Re: What Size Gears Should I Go With

yea hopefully i will be getting my trans in my van so it aint a daily driver anymore, its killing me to put miles on it, it normaly only get 4-6k a year, so yea it need to be back to the cruiser, LOL, but i do like taking it on trips, and out on weekends or dates, so the cruiseabilty is a major issue, im not going over 3.73 pretty sure of that....... anyone have an idea on the ballpark of my top speed with the 3.73's or would it remain like the 2.73 an never be able to top it out, i would like to have 140 out of it, as thats what the honda will do

Re: What Size Gears Should I Go With

What rpm are you shifting at? That's a big part of picking a gear for racing, along with tire size but we'll assume that'a 26".

Re: What Size Gears Should I Go With

If I did the math right, 3.42's should put you at 145 mph at a little over 4600 rpm. You would hit 145 at a little over 5000 rpm with 3.73's. My personal favorite, 3.23's would put you at 145 at just under 4400 rpm. But I agree also, 3.42's would be a good all around gear.

I agree with this as well. Anything more than 3.42s for the street is too much IMO. I have 3.42s now and they are borderline. Im not going to swap them out though cause launches are soooo fun. Cruising on the highway im turning about 2500-2700 at 70-75mph. So it fits your bill perfectly. If you want an even stronger rear end i would go for a 3.45 9 bolt posi. Good luck finding one though.

Re: What Size Gears Should I Go With

Not sure exactly how much time it'll shave off your 1/4 mile time, but trust me, it'll feel like a different car. When I ditched the pathetic 2.73's in mine and went to 3.42, I was amazed at the difference in acceleration off the line. I'm running 3.23's now, and I'm quite happy with them as well. Whether you go 3.42 or 3.23, either of these two ratios are LEAGUES better than 2.73's. I personally can't say which ratio I like better out of the two. I'm going to be ditching my 700r4 for a TKO this spring, which has a 3.27 first gear ratio, so I think I'll stick with the 3.23's. With the 700r4's 3.06 first gear, I'd have to give the 3.42's a slight preference. They made my car a lot more fun to drive around town, and it still had great manners on the freeway. Btw, the only reason I switched to 3.23's was the 3.42 rear I had was a pegleg with drum brakes, and I picked up a posi/disc, 3.23 rear out of a 91 GTA.
