New Posi...What To Do?
Hey all, well last fall I parked my 90 GTA a little earlier than expected because one day I was slowly driving and kept hearing a sudden click/bang sound every couple tire rotations coming from the rear end...so I took my GTA to my brothers friend who has his own shop and he said it was the posi and in that case he suggested that I go with some sort of aftermarket one as it will last longer, etc...so now as springs approaches rather slowly I want to have my GTA ready, so what options does this leave me now...by the way its a stock 9-bolt posi...I will be getting it done by my mechanic and i'm not familiar with alot of this as i'm still learning
...I hear there isn't much for a 9-bolt so what can I do if I don't want to rebuild it or get another used one? Thanks, Josh

you have quite a few options you can search for a used 9 bolt posi and hope it works, or you can rebuild your current one, or you can swap in a 10 bolt and have plenty of aftermarket support, or you could go with a 9" or 12 bolt. It is just a matter of how much you want to spend or how original you want to keep your car.
Personally I would get a 10 bolt, with your car stock you don't have to worry to much about toasting it, and if you want to go back to original just hang on to the 9 bolt somehere. I got rid of my 9 bolt because of no aftermarket and I'm very happy with my 10 bolt.

Depending on what's broken, you might be able to get parts from:
http://www.9bolt.com/
Might want to be sitting before you look at the prices though

The way you described the noise, that could also be caused by a couple of broken teeth on the ring or pinion gear. If that was the case, you can usually pick up good, used ring/pinion set pretty cheap. You'd still have to pay the money to have someone take it all apart and install the replacement parts though. A broken 9 bolt rear makes a great doorstop or boat anchor. I have to agree with mcgarnicle. Your best bet would be to throw a 10 bolt in. Just for giggles, ask your mechanic buddy to try and find a new, aftermarket posi unit for that 9 bolt.
