Can This Rear Work?
About a year ago I bought a 91Rs parts car. I only bought the car for the dash pad, cowl hood and GFXs. Well the other day I had the junkyard come by and pick whats left of the car up, but before they left I cut the rear out from under it. After I get it out and rolled it over to the shop I opened the back cover to see what kinda rear it was. When I opened it up I was kinda surprised to find what looked like brand new gear lube and what looked to be fairly brand new parts. I figured it up to be a 3.42 rear.
Now my question is, is it possible for me to swap this to my 92z? That rear is a drum rear and my Z has a Disc rear so is it possible for me to swap out the disc to the drum rear and then use it in my car?

you could always keep your discs and just swap the carrier

What kind of axle is under your car now is it a 10 bolt or a 9 bolt?

Re: Can This Rear Work?
I assume the discs are PBR's. If so, they're desirable.

Re: Can This Rear Work?
Personally if they're both 10 bolts I would just pull the axles and swap the brakes between the 2 to retain the discs in the rear. Its easy to do the axles and transfer the backing plates, because carrier and pinion swaps are far more complicated and have to be done very accurately or the rear end will destroy itself.

It'd be dumb to mess up a perfectly good ring/pinion setup. You could just run the drums if you wanted to. However, it's really quite easy to modify the flanges on the drum rear to bolt up the disc backing plates. There's an article in the tech section that discusses how to do it. Basically you just cut off the top of the drum flange, where the big hole that the wheel cylinder brake line runs through. Then you grind a 45 on the four corners of the flange and drill the holes to where they line up with your disc backing plates. Joined: Aug 1999
