Taking it in the rear!!

Here's the low down on my gearing out back. I currently have a 10bolt 2.73 stock rear with drum brakes. (92 RS 305 auto 700r4) Rearend is so lacking. Tranny is hurting too (tackle that later)... anyway, just bought a complete rearend assy out of an 85 iroc optioned 3.42 with rear disc brakes. well, I kicked out about $700 for the rearend assembly, I wanted discs out back real bad, and the ratio was perfect... went to put it in and the teeth on the pinion are knawled up and there is a knot of metal on the magnet the size of an orange. Pissed off!! luckily i checked it before putting it in, ashamed the seller didnt before letting me drive 3hrs with it after paying out the rear for it. Anyway.... he is offering to give me a new set of ring/pinion gears (i'll push him to get me an install kit too) to make up for it but I'll have to put it in. this rear like i said is out of a 85 iroc.... i currently have the stock from the 92 camaro... my friend (whos shop i'm using and skills too) said it would be too much of a PITA to change them, possibly not getting all the metal out of the axle shaft/housing, etc. so, what should I do. I paid A LOT of money for this rear and dont want to give up the rear discs...but I will if it makes $en$e. i dont plan on building a 600hp monster....

if I keep and overhauld the new assy, should I put in ta new carrier too?
or should I just re-do the 2.73 and keep the drums, change the carrier and gears???

I dont know what to do. HELP!!!!!!! i"ve already spent too much on this rear, and have only 400 left budget on the rear replacement. hell, for that, I could have had a good start at a moser---but dont want to go that far with it. just rear discs and 3.42. someone hook a fella' up and share the wealth.

We spun the yoke and could keep the tires from spinning at the same time (sever slipping) so how much damage has been done?? is the carrier smoked???

Re: Taking it in the rear!!

It sounds like this guy sold you a boat anchor. $700 dollars is a price you pay for a built 10 bolt w/PBR brakes not an 85 stocker.

It looks like you're kinda SOL. The good news is that for $400 you should be able to pick up a good 4th gen rear end. 98-02, 12 inch disks, 3.42 w/ torsen carrier.

You might even be able to sell the disk set up from the rear end you just got and recoupe some of your loss, not much though, if there the single piston iron calipers.

Try and get your money back from this guy also because he totally ripped you off you probably won't get all of it back but some would probably lessen the sting.

Sorry for this ordeal that tottaly sucks.

Re: Taking it in the rear!!

thanks mc, I think so too. He told me he would refund the loot if I brought the rear back to him. so, what rears should I look for (out of what year 4th gen)? i read about the difference in length and how to offset, that shouldnt be a problem, and sounds like its a direct bolt in otherwise.

let me know---a grocery list for the new rear would be great--i'll read through the board and check out everything else--seems like everything has been posted 40 times over and again.

Re: Taking it in the rear!!

return it. if you want to run disc brakes and are looking to spend that kind of coin, just get a good 9" center section out of a junkyard, and buy the moser 9" housing and axle package from them and ask for the GM housing ends to be put on and buy a set of LT1 brakes and backing plates. Otherwise....10 bolts should NEVER be more than $200-250 at the most for a good disc setup out of a thirdgen.

Re: Taking it in the rear!!

It's just a matter of what you want to spend you were already set on spending $700, so get that back, and if you still want to spend that much you can do what xpndb13 is suggesting, and never really have to do anything with the rear ever again.

Or if you want to spend less you can buy a 4th gen rear (98-02). It also depends on what you want your car to do. With me I just wanted a daily driver I can take to the track every now and then, and I'm not really putting down enough power and not running slicks so I am not to worried about breaking my 4th gen rear. But if I was planning to build up over 320rwhp then I would have gotten something stronger like a 9" or 12 bolt.

Here is a link about 4th gen swaps that should answer all of your questions.
