Junkyarding it got a few questions

ok im looking for a new rear for my 89 Rs, nothing fancy on the motor its all stock, i'm looking for a new rear for a posi set up, i dont know much about these so help would be greatly appreciated, i was told that i could ****** one off of an s-10 because more of those came with posi and it will be a direct fit? True? I dunno but i also would like to know the difference between the 9 and 12 bolt rears like if its wqorth it for me at this point.

Instead of buying an entirely new rear, is there anywhere i can get a new posi unit i can put on mine? How hard would that be? What exactly would it involv?

My other thought was a 4th gen rear end, this is what i would like the most so what exactly should i be looking for because every yard i ask they mention w/ or w/o traction control, does this matter to me? I know i want posi and discs so would any rear with posi and disks just be a bolt up for me?
Thanks for any help

This is what comes in the S trucks... you don't want it. Looks like this.

See this thread, a handful of posts below yours which you no doubt already read before asking about it, as to why.

If what you see looks like what's in the pic, don't bother.

Re: Junkyarding it got a few questions

Although I've never seen one look like THAT. The ones I've pulled covers off kinda resembled that but with a lot of fuzzy little shiny pieces of metal stuck to the magnet and generally floating around.

A late model 4th gen rear with disc and posi will bolt right in. The few I've run across that were for sale must have been made out of unobtainium for the prices they were asking, though.

I'd stay away from the earlier cast iron rear discs. They're OK, not much better than the aluminum drum setups, will require a retrofit kit to correct some factory faults, etc.

A posi unit with any real mileage on it isn't a good deal. There's no support to rebuild the stock third gen types either. A good aftermarket posi set up for 28 spline axles is a good upgrade.

I'd say get a 93-02 Z28 rearend. (you'll need to run different wheels because of offset) Or spend a lil money and put a posi unit in yours with new gears and bearings. By the way just swapping gears brings new life to your car!!

Yeah, I had to gank this pic off of eBay, to get one that wasn't already exploded...

a 93-02 Z28 rearend
Actually, make that a 98-02 rear...

93-97 used an Auburn unit. Still pretty crappy. 98-02 used the Torsen.

Re: Junkyarding it got a few questions

'Bout two years ago I looked at a rear end a local yard offered to sell me for $250. 3:42 with disc brakes. I would NEVER buy a used rear end without opening the cover. Turned out it had a fubar gov-lock. It was still sitting in the same spot last month when I went by.
