Torque converter ID help

Did the search and I'm not finding what I'm looking for. I have a 700R4 in a 91 RS behind a L98 350 carbed engine. Everything was new or re manufactured when installed 2K ago. The 700R4 got a shift kit, vette servo, upgrade rebuild kit and a blue torque converter. Previous owner said he doesn't know the stall speed of the TC but he told the mechanic that did all the work he wanted a TC from a S-10.

Can someone tell me what stall this TC is?

Thx.

Re: Torque converter ID help

It's loose.... its stall varies ALOT depending on engine power. Unlike a GOOD converter, which those tend to have more nearly the same stall speed regardless of engine torque; good ones act more like a "switch" (free below stall / locked up above stall) as opposed to the S-10 unit which never really locks up hard under high torque because it's meant for going behind a little weenie gutless torque-challenged 6-cyl. Kind of like the old "Vega" converter for T-350 a few years back... nobody won races against REAL converters with those.

But, behind a typical 305, it will sort of stall around 1800-2000; and behind a typical 350, about 200-300 RPM higher, and more nebulous. But it won't be a sharp dividing line, it will be sort of "fuzzy" between not coupled and coupled.

Re: Torque converter ID help

What about the 4.3 in a S-10 won't that have a different TC. Doesn't the color of the TC tell you the stall?

Re: Torque converter ID help

This is a stock reman. L98 that he tried doing the 350 TBI but the mechanics could not get it to run right so he decided to go with a carb setup after spending $800 on 3 different chip burns and the shops labor.

Of course not; not any more than the color an engine is painted tells you its cubic inches. Anybody can paint anything any color they want.

There might be a string of 4 letters on it; those may tell you a little about the stall speed, if it's a stock converter, and if the stall is still the same as it was when it was built. Apart from that, get in the car, stand on the brake, put the car in gear, and give it some gas; whatever RPM the engine goes to, that's its stall speed, more or less.

None of the rest of that has much to do with identifying the converter... unfortunately, what other people do or have done, can be quite difficult to figure out afterwards. People can do some pretty random stuff; they aren't exactly rational at all times.
