The 3-4 WOT shift dillema. a new solution?

I'm getting absolutely sick of my transmission holding 3rd gear to long in WOT. I know there was a valve fix for this through GM but when I looked up the part it said it was discontinued. Is there another way to fix this problem to where I can use WOT without it kicking down to 3rd gear so soon? I can only hold WOT at half throttle before it kicks down. Some help and to be pointed in the right direction would be great.

Sonnax, FairBanks both make this valve also.

This is easy and you can do this yourself, by taking out the TV plunger and TV plunger sleeve (the valve body does not have to come off for this) and block the 4-3 downshift passages in the TV plunger sleeve with two allen screws $0.34. Grind the excess off with a dremel to clear the valve and bore. This will allow 3-4 WOT shifts, and will hold 4th at high rpm. If you want the instructions on how to do this, let me know?

That's awesome but here's my next question. What size tap do I need? Screw size?

Sonnax # 77966-94MK looks to be the 3-4 WOT TV sleeve kit.

Re: The 3-4 WOT shift dillema. a new solution?

what i figure I could do is go to pick-a-part and pull one of these out of one of the MANY 700r4's they have there. I know there is an old impala there with the tranny still in it. Do the mods listed above and just swap them out. My other questions still remain as far as which size tap and screws I need.

You are going in aluminum. The allen screws tap themselves in, no special tools here.

Re: The 3-4 WOT shift dillema. a new solution?

Well I was able to get another valve from a friend who had a spare 700r4 laying around and I got some 8/32 steel screws and just screwed them in with alittle threadlocker. I also ground them down flush. My next question is is there a certain way I need to put this in?

Pull yours out and replace in reverse order. Make sure plunger valve moves freely in the TV bushing sleeve and the TV bushing goes in the bore of the valve body ok. It is pretty straight forward.

Re: The 3-4 WOT shift dillema. a new solution?

Well i put in the modded valve last weekend as well as did a drain and fill with a filter change and it works pretty good. One question I have is that I already have the Sonnax TV spring to firm up the shifts a bit and it seems that 3rd gear holds WAY to long. It doesn't downshift into 3rd if I have it going faster than 80 but If I punch it from a roll it holds 3rd like it doesn't want to shift into 4th unless I still let off of the throttle. I know I have the TV cable adjusted right but I'm afraid that it might burn something up. Any suggestions?

Re: The 3-4 WOT shift dillema. a new solution?

With the modded TV sleeve, it won't shift from 4th to 3rd above 80-85 mph. That's one of the benefits. You don't get the back and forth shifting if you're cruising at high speeds.

As for not shifting 3rd to 4th, I don't know. Sometimes I think transmissions are the car equivalent of brain surgery.
