another is this is a posi (i searched)

hey guys im lookin to buy a rearend for my 88 iroc. i found one (havent actually seen it yet)

so i need to know if it is a posi , the owner could only tell me it was a 10 bolt disc break from a 85 z28 carburated manual car

so from using the camaro tech data i fugured it was a 3.23 or 3.73 most likely a 3.23.........So did these come in both posi and non posi ?, the owner cant tell me much more about it and the part is about 1.5hrs drive and with todays gas prices i dont wanna drive up there for nothing, any infor would help

I think you would have to check the RPO card in the car. I believe G80 or G92 are both posi. But I could be wrong about those early cars. Also, you dont know who has had their fingers in it before.

Either way, you are still buying another 26 spline rear end. You might consider upgrading to a 90+ rear end, or a 4th gen rear, with the stronger 28 spline axles.

thanks, i know its risky buyin a 85 rear, but the price is decent, i doubt this guy will wana go and find the rpos (i asked, says he'd get back to me) so i posted the question here, i ve searched for a few months now and would love to get a 4th gen rear, unfortunatly here in Toronto its gonna be about 800-1200 for a complete rear

G80=Limited slip differential(posi), G92=Performance axle ratio. Don't hold me to that though.

Have the owner check and see if he can find the axle identification number stamped on the front of the right axle housing. He likely will have to clean off the dirt and rust to find it. The complete number will look like this 2AB 0 103 2. You just need to know the first three numbers/letters

The 1985 codes are....

8JA 3.08 STD
8JB 3.23 STD
8JC 3.42 STD
8JD 3.73 STD
8JP 3.08 POSI
8JQ 3.23 POSI
8KA 3.42 STD
8KB 3.73 STD
8KR 3.08 STD
8PP 3.08 POSI
8PQ 3.23 POSI
8PR 3.43 POSI
8PS 3.73 POSI

Most likely the 8Jx have rear drums and the 8Px have rear disc brakes.

The remainder of the number has to do with who manufactured the axle and when it was made in 1985.

Thanks a ton for that info man that helped unbelievably,...... I went to see it, and it was not a posi.........so the search contiues lol

Good to hear that you found the information useful, and that you did not spend your $$ on an axle you did not want.

One will turn up, and with the codes, you will know what it left the factory with.
