Re: ppl with stall converters

All converters stall. A stock converter stalls around 1200-1500 rpm.

With a high stall converter, normal acceleration is the same but when the engine rpms are below the stall speed, the converter needs to slip. This slipping creates a lot of heat and a large tranny cooler should be used.

Under hard acceleration, the engine will quickly come up to the stall speed. The purpose of a high stall converter is to put the engine rpms into the powerband where it will do the most work.

Best converter choice is determined by the camshaft's advertised duration. Stall speed should be about 500 rpm above where the cam starts to make power. A camshaft rated at 2000-5500 for example should have a converter with a stall speed around 2500.
