rear axle questions

i bought a rear disc, 2.73, limited slip rear axle for my car. it came out of a 86. i have a 1989 rs with 2.73 open diff, drums. my stepfather (also a third gen owner) has a limited slip drum setup out of a 88 IROC he was going to use in his car. he suggested maybe we do a swap. he gets the rear end with the disc brakes limited slip and i get the drum limited slip. im stating to realize that i can swap for discs but its going to be an expensive, complicated pain in the rear. what am i better off doing? would the limited slip drum setup out of a 88 iroc Lb9 be the G92 performance axle ratio? i noted that the 88 was available 2.73's or 3.23's. would the 2.73's be the setup that i have now with discs and the G92 option have drums. it would definitely be cheaper the swap out a drum for a drum setup. how much stopping performance would i gain with a disc swap/ how much acceleration performance would i gain by swaping to
3.23's with a L03. only other mods to the L03 being an open aircleaner and a proper 3" exhaust, performance cat, and shorty headers.

Re: rear axle questions

Don't waste your time with the early rear discs, drums work better. I'd go with the drums even if they are the same ratio.

Re: rear axle questions

does anyone know what the ratio was in a 88 drum limited slip setup from an LB9 car?

Re: rear axle questions

you're gonna have to pop that cover off to know for sure.
and I agree with gmgod pre 89 disks are garbage and drums from the same pre 89 era perform the same or better.

Going from 2.73's to 3.23's you won't notice earth shattering acceleration but it will be a slight improvement, and more enjoyable.

its the 88 and older discs that suck
89 was first year for pbr aluminum calipers
these were on corvettes and early 4th gens

Re: rear axle questions

ummm yes, that's why I used "pre" 89. In reference to before the 89 PBR brakes.

What would?

So-called 1LE in the case of the rears because all four-wheel disc cars, 89-92, had the PBR's. One reason to chose an 82-88 disc rear end is upgradeabilty, though Ed Miller's "no hasslel" kit may be as good or better for drums:
