PLEASE HELP THIS IGNORANT FOOL TRYING TO CHANGE HIS TRANNY FLUID!!!
hello-- I need help
I'm trying to change the transmission fluid & filter in my 89 firebird. It has a 700R4. I'm trying to get the drain pan off but can't get to the rear row of bolts because there's a cross member in the way-- do I need to support the rear of the tranny & take this cross member off to get to that last row? It looks like there's a way to slide it back to get to those bolts-- but I'm not sure-- and I need to do it tomorrow morning- PLEASE advise--
thanx

When I take my pan off I just use extension, socket, and a ratchet. I did not have to take the crossmember off when I did my filter change. It was a little tight but was doable. I hope this helps some.

It's probably possible to get the pan off with the crossmember still in place. When we pulled the pan on a 700R4 in the company 1/2 ton, it was easier to support the tailshaft and pull the crossmember.
Depending on clearance, you may be able to do it without actually pulling the crossmember. Unbolt the tranny mount from the crossmember and lift the back of the transmission. It may give enough room to access the rear pan bolts.
