I have a 700r4 in my 91 formula, i recently had a b&m shift improvment kit installed, new valve body, and new kickdown cable aswell. I now leave the car in OD and when it's at 100% throotle it shifts at lik4 4600 rpm. how do i raise that to say 5200? what regulate what rpm it shift at WOT?

Put it into second at 5200rpm.

Seriously though, you can swap govenors in the transmission, or you can manual shift when appropriate.

I assume it always shifted at 4600rpm, and that this isn't a shift-kit change - is that accurate?

Re: 700R4 shift early

before i took it to the tranny shop it never shifted properly, it would always shift super early unless i manually shifted it, but my kickdown cable and throttle cable were messed up. so i bought new ones, and had a shift kit installed. now it shifts great and drives the way it should, aside from shifting a little early at 4600. shifting the tranny will ruin it won't it? thats what i heard.

governer.. i think there are three or four different ones.. when i had my tranny redone i had it built in a case from another camaro, it had the v6 governer, was in third gear before crossing an intersection :P swapped in one for a z28, now she shifts at 5k WOT, tranny shop swapped it within 10 min so it cant be too terrible to get to.

Re: 700R4 shift early

The easiest way is to swap in a V6 governor which is supposed to raise the shifts to 5600. Be fore warned, this is not always the case. I had a V6 governor in my new 700R4 and 4500 was the best I could get out of it. I had to go with a Corvette governor to get 5700 out of it.

Re: 700R4 shift early

so what is my car supposed to shift at from the factory? I'm thinking this isn't the original 700r4, cause it shifts early, and the tranny shop said the pan looks real clean. the car has 120000 miles on it, so i'm thinking the tranny was replaced. the guy above said theres like three of them, how do i know which one to get? where can i purchase a corvette governor?

Shifting the transmission manually will not ruin the transmission. To make it shift automatically at 5200 you need to change the governor weights or springs.

It's supposed to shift around 4500 from the factory. You could buy one from GM but I don't know how much they would run. You could probably go to a local transmission shop and get one for $30. They're super easy to change, the hardest part is getting the cover back on. The difference between the three are the size of the weights. If you google 700R4 governor you should be able to figure out through pictures which one is which.

Re: 700R4 shift early

I tried the GM#24202117 governor today and WOT no shift up to 6000rpm, I dident try to go higher.

Im probably going to grind the weights of the stock one or buy some for the GM#24202117.
