How to find out what type rear end I have?

Hi there..

I have a plan on changing my gears in my 87 Camaro Sport Coupe.

But how do I find out wich kind of rear end I have?
I know that the gears is 2.73 now on my car and I was thinking of changing in to 3.43 gears.

But to change the gears I need to know if it is a GM7,5" or 8,5" or higher??...How to find that out?...Serial number mayby?

I think the best place to start is to count the bolts.
If you have 9 bolts, you've got a Borg-Warner, if you have 10, you've got a GM. Both need completely different parts.

If you are sure you have a 2.73 ratio, you probably have a GM.

No thirdgen car is equipped with an 8 whatever. Do a search on carriers (series II and III) before you do anything else. Also note that you'll have to swap the drive and driven gears to make you speedo register correctly.

In 87, only the IROC-Z cars had the 9 bolt option. All the other models had the 7.5" 10 bolt.

According to the TGO data list, the 87 Camaro SC only came with a V6 which has 3.42 gears. All the other A4 cars have 2.73 gears.

I agree to that the SC came with a V6 but it also came with a 305 engine if you wanted some extra power on that time...So my car have stock 305 engine with 700r4 transmission.

I am pretty sure that my car have 2.73 gears since the engine is running about 1400rpm - 1500rpm in 60mph...

If it came with a 305 then it's not really a SC but a SC/LT. The LT option gave it the 305.

The LT has a 165hp 305 and 2.73 gears.
