700r only one drive gear?
700r only one drive gear?
ok heres my situation. i have an 84 with the 700r tranny. it has a b&m megashifter that was in there before i bought the car. my question is, is there supposed to be more then one drive speed? cause the letters on the side has reverse, nuetral, 1, 2 , and 3. now i know on normal cars you can switch between the 1 2 and 3 depending on how your driving. problem is i only have on drive speed. should i have 3 different drive speeds? if i should, then why cant i shift into any others? any help is appreciated. thank you!!

That's odd, it almost sounds like someone put in a megashifter for the wrong trans, like a TH350 or something. Are you sure your trans is a 700R4? The 700 shift pattern is P-R-N-OD-D-2-1 (OD is 4th, D is 3rd).

my trans is deff the 700r. i changed the filter not too long ago and used the 700r filter and gasket so it has to be right. ya on the little thing on the side it goes p r n and i think 3 2 1 or 1 2 3. but i can only put it in one of the numbers

Are u talking about a dual gate shifter where you have park reverse overdrive and drive on one side and one two and three on the other side?

on the megashifter, you pull up on the little "t" to move from P to R,N,D. then you let off of the "t" to move it to the lower gears via the ratcheting action. it also sounds like you have the wrong indicator plate.

yeah, the megashifter is a rachet shifter.
go to b&ms website and it will tell you how to shift.
basically though, you go from park to either r, n, or d (OD really) by pulling up on the little handle.
from there, you rachet it back to get to 3,2,and 1, unless you have a reverse valvebody. then it would go: p r n 1 2 3 OD i believe.
another note is that aftermarket shifters have 2 park positions.
the reason for this is that there is twice the normal gap between park and reverse than the rest of the gears.
