Maybe a dumb question
I have read a number of threads about changing out rear ends but have not yet found how to answer my question.
I have a 2.73 that is being changed out to a 3.42 in my 89 Trans Am with a 700R4. So, I have learned that I need a white 19 tooth speedo gear if I am correct.
1. How do I know if I have mechanical speedo or not? (the car has been in storage for a lot of the last six years so I have someone else doing the work for me now)
2. How hard is it to change out the speedo gears? Where can I find instructions on how to do it? or would I do better having that changed while the car is in the shop?

Your 89 is electronic.
I have no experience with the 700R4, but I've read (IIRC) that the whole business can be done in car.

The white, 19 tooth gear is for the manual transmissions with 3.42's. You'll need to change both the drive gear on the output shaft of the trans, and the driven gear on your VSS unit. If you're running the 245/50/16 size wheels, you'll need the gray, 15 tooth drive gear, and the yellow, 42 tooth driven gear. They're not too hard to change out with the trans in the car, but you do have to remove the tailshaft extension housing to replace the drive gear on the output shaft, which involves removing the driveshaft, torque arm, etc. If you have decent mechanical skills, it's not that bad, if not, you might want to have a shop do it for you. PATC Raptor corp. carries the gears you'll need. They have an ebay store, and they'll ship to Europe.

Re: Maybe a dumb question
its not hard to do, i put it off for years, fearing it would be a disaster and after i started the swap i was surprised how easy it was. the only trick part it getting the gear off the output shaft, there is a article in the tech section and its spot on, check it out
