What trans are you trying to put in? IIRC, short tailshaft TH350 is the normal "car TH350" and the long tailshaft TH350 is the same length as a 700R4. Hope that helps. 700R4 would have been stock in an '84 though.

If you are planning on putting in a TH350, then you will need to get a torque arm mounting kit which are REDICULOUS in price at right around $100. A person could easily build there own for pennies or nothing at all if they had a welder and some scrap steel. JMO

the t5 5 speed and the 700r4 use the same driveshaft=fact
this means they are the same length
the swap you wish to perform must be a thm 350 cause they are the only trany i know of for your options (GM) with either option
short shafts are more desirable
long shafts are plenty strong and if you wana save some money by not purchasing a new driveshaft
then yes get the long shaft thm 350
and your driveshaft will slide right in
