Re Stall help

Took out my dyno sheet, and looking to get my torque converter restalled. My peak torque is at 4000 rpm at 430 ft lbs. Right now I have a 2900 stall vigilante. They offer a free re stall within 2 years of buying I believe. This is a street/strip car. The standard would be 500 rpm below max torque, so I was thinking of a 3500 lock up. Would this be ok with my combo, and still work well on the streets. I do have a deeper tranny pan and an external cooler hooked up also. Right now my trans temp never gets above 165.
thanks

Re: Re Stall help

I had one of those Vigilantes in my 700R4 and never could get it to stall past 2,200 without breaking the tires. It would flash stall fine to 3,000 though. I would def get it loosened up. I wish I had sent mine back but ended up selling it because the 700R4's won't stand for much abuse regardless of how much money you put in them. I got tired after the fourth rebuild.

I spent $1500 on mine and it went bye bye real fast. Overdrive is always the first to go on those things. Mine had kevlar racing bands, borg warner clutches, billet servos, 4L60E internals and a Vigilante convertor and still broke. I bought a TH350 from a guy for $250 and slapped a TCI Street Fighter in it and it's handling my 552 hp 385 just fine.

The Vigilante was rated at like 1100 hp, but getting a 700R4 to hang with it was impossible for me. Good luck with yours.

Re: Re Stall help

With 287 advertised duration, I'd recommend a stall speed in the 3900-4100 range which pretty well matches what you've found on the dyno.

Re: Re Stall help

If I did go with a 4000 stall how well would that work on the street, and would there be much of a difference between a 3500 and a 4000
Thanks

Re: Re Stall help

id say stay with the 2900. most converters are rated at 280 fl lbs of tq. you have more so it will have a higher stall speed.
and you will deff build a ton of heat in the tranny with a 4000 stall or evan a 3500 stall unless you constantly drive above 4000 rpm so the converter is not slipping.

Re: Re Stall help

you proably will only slow down with a looser convter untill you get a brake and can make use of a larger one.

Re: Re Stall help

they don't make a brake for the 700. I am thinking of going with a 3500. Any thoughts

Re: Re Stall help

A 3500 will give more performance than your 2900 but less streetability. You need one around 4000 rpm for all out performance but street driving will suffer even more because the engine will always flash to 4000 under acceleration and driving around at part throttle with the rpms under 4000 rpm will allow a lot of converter slip which will produce a lot of heat in the tranny oil.

Higher engine rpms will use more fuel so mileage will also suffer.

A 12" converter that stalls at 4000 isn't the same as a 10 or 8" that stalls at 4000. The 12" would be real loose while the 8" would be real tight. Although they all stall at the same speed, they all react differently to engine rpm.

Re: Re Stall help

yeah i do....performabuilt did mine....i dont feel much of a difference on the street from the crappy s10 converter to the 3500 stall i have in there now. On the track was a different story...my 60 footers went from 1.97 to 1.73
