Whats up with this 700R4

My IROC's 700R4 has been acting pretty weird. It basically runs like a POS when cold. Its slips and shifts real late and hard, and whines too. But when warmed up it runs just fine. The hotter it gets the better it runs. I thought the opposite was true for slushboxes. I also recently changed my trans fluid but it didn't help a bit. I also added some Lucas stop leak and fluid conditioner but it didn't do a damn thing. The tranny doesn't leak, just acts weird. This problem gets worse in the winter. My guess is that the tranny's having trouble pumping the fluid when cold but it does an OK job of pumping thinner warmer fluid. Somebody help me out please - I don't want this tranny taking a dump on me and making my hatred for slushboxes even worse.

yup yup.. definatly sounds like the pump is going bad, either that or the pickup tube has some sort of restriction in it.. try a large can of TransX, the only atf aditive ill use, its a petro disilite, so it should theoriticly thin out the fluid a little bit, and swell up the seals a bit..

If the transmission gets better when warm then you DO NOT have a front pump problem. When the fluid gets hotter it will get thinner and whatever problems you have get worse. Just the reverse is what is normally true, especially for the 700R4. I need more information on this call me at 800 7763288 Mon-Sat 10-6 PST, and I will try too help.
Glad Too help!!!

Due to the fact that it gets better as the car warms up I would first check to make sure it's not an engine or tuning related problem.
Incorrect fluid level could cause slipping or a late shift like you described.
You may want to re-check the trans fluid for the proper level. You should check it at normal operating temperature, should be between 150-200 deg F., which is after the car has been running for aprox 10 mins or after driving about 8 miles.

Its definitely not related to the engine. I spoke to Pro Built Automatics today. He said it could be some problem with either the governor or the TV mechanism inside the trans. Either of them could be sticking and freeing up after the trans warms up. He said the Transgo Junior shift kit should fix the problem. But I forgot to ask him whether its safe to put a shift kit on an old tranny with these symptoms - B&M says shift kits can worsen the problem on worn out trannys.

I've also noticed that power from the engine doesn't get to the wheels immediately like it should during or just after quick turns. By the same token, it also feels sluggish when I try part throttle downshifts. Power is either all or nothing. Is it some problem with the trans or just the nature of an auto tranny?

Sounds to me like it's time for a new trans or a rebuild.
