Will spider gear failure cause damage to..

my ring&pinion?
This thought just occured to me, I swapped to richmond 3.73 ring and pinion, but the spider gears are still stock in my open-end diff. Now as long as there is plenty of tire slippage will my dif hold up? or is that a stupid newbie question?
I mean i wont be running it extremely hard all the time, but if the spiders go, can they cause internal damage?
I am making close to 400hp and my spider gears wont be replaced until I get a powertrax locker. what else might fail? I've had the whole dif rebuilt, bearings and all.

any thoughts?
thanks,
Jeremy

I've busted spider gears twice before..once in a 10 bolt Dana 44 rear, and a 12 bolt GM rear...both times I was lucky I guess, the chunks stayed low in the housing.

It is possible that they could get inbetween the R&P and do some damage, but it wasn't an issue in my cases.

i had a friend break his spider gears and they got his ring and pinion, depends on how bad it gets and how quick you stop the car. he never stoped when he heard the noise
