My pilot bushing is TRASHED !! Ideas?
I changed from an automatic over to a 5-speed many years ago, went through 1 regular t-5 and 4 world class t-5's , well, stupid me, never checked or thought to replace the pilot bushing. I later put a T-56 in my car, again, never checked the bushing.
OK, I remove the bushing earlier since I am going through putting a new clutch in the car since I have yet to have a good clutch since the 6 speed swap and have driven the car about 200 miles in the last 6 years. I was quickly surprised at the condition of the bushing when I removed it!!! I am headed out in the morning to find a roller bearing to replace it (supposed to be working). Any ideas why it is cracked? why would it be this hammered? The inner diameter has been hogged out badly by the input shafts...
What would cause this over time? I would guess the bushing was used approx. 6000 miles or so total, so not much really, at least in my eyes.
This may explain why the last T-5 was so hard to shift under power.
Thanks for any input!
Jason

Not sure if this will help or not but you might want to have the dia of the end of the input shaft measured against a new poilot bearing. Long Long ago in a city far far away my fathers RX7's original transmission was shot and needed to be replaced so he got a junker and later ended up with the same thing. The end dia of the old transmission had worn against the bearing from a internal problem and vibration that translated to ware on the "New" one as well. You can have it ground and sleved by a machine shop if its out of spec... he did. Then replace the bearing with a fresh on and go on.

Well, you've asked alot of that bearing. Misalignment of a shaft, excessive movement somewhere, any clunking or excessive clutch travel?

The only problem I experianced with the other transmissions that under power, the tranny was very hard to shift, but was fine when normally driven. I assume that the tranny was being bound up by the input shaft being flexed around... I got rid of the last trans. about 6 years ago, so I don't know if it had a sloppy input shaft or not. The clutch felt fine, at the time I was using a Centerforce. I put the T-56 in 5-6 years back but had only driven it around 200 miles over those years due to a very badly slipping clutch and a fork problem. I have fixed these things recently and it seems to work great now....

I have heard many bad things about the roller pilot bushings (like the rollers themselves getting wiped out leaving the inner race rubbing against the outer one). I was told by many local racers to run the solid bronze Lakewood one so thats what I did. just some food for thought
