Torque Converter Lockup
Torque Converter Lockup
Hello all,
This problem has been going on with my car since I bought the car 2 years ago, (86 Z-28, 305 TPI, th700r4, 130,000 miles). Occasionally when I put the car into gear the car boughs down and sometimes stalls. When the car stalls after putting in gear I must put the car into park, start the car again , rev the motor, and try again. Sometimes it is so bad that I must push on the gas while I place the car in gear. This only occurs sometimes. Also sometimes the torque converter seems to unlock at highway speeds causing the rpms to go up about 250 rpms. Usually if I step on the gas and get the tranny to drop back down into 3rd and then letup and have it go into OD the converter stays locked for a while. When I bought the car, in bad shape, the previous owner stated that he just replaced the converter before he sold it to me.
Also in a hair brained note, could the converter locking up cause the rpms to increase at a stop? Sometimes at a red light the idle increase from 750 to 1000 and when I apply the gas the car hesitates, sometimes severely, and then goes.
Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!!!

I know that this one is probably a loooong shot, but here goes. On third gen f-bodies, by shorting the top left and right connectors on the ALDL, it is possible to achieve a torque convertor lockup. Perhaps, is there a chance that these wires are contacting someplace? Yeah, I told you this was a long shot!

Ant86, sounds like the TCC solenoid is just getting stuck. It's been a while, but I think it costs around $40, and yes ya can do it from inside the trans pan, without removing the tranny.

The solenoid cannot cause the TCC to lock in 1st gear. The fluid path is blocked out until you get at least into 2nd.
The convertor clutch itself could cause both the locking when first engaged and the unlocking at cruise that you described. The clutch could not cause the last problem, but low fluid or an otherwise bad convertor could.
My bet would be that you're ready for a good thorough rebuild.

Five7Kid, I believe it's a sort-of-common problem for a 700r4 equipped car to drive fine when it's cold, and then all of a sudden stall when it comes to a stop. I know it's fluidically impossible for the TCC to try and engage in 1st gear- but if it engages normally, and then can't disengage...
Ah Ha! I remembered a webpage that talked about this. Although it's regarding the front-wheel-drive 125C trannies, the same applies with the 700r4.
