The rest of the numbers have to do with the date and place the rear end was made.

2HA = 1987 3.23 gears

It's hard to tell from the axle code. Either open it up or check the RPO list. G80 is posi

The axle code should also indicate posi or open. I'm 1500 miles from my book, or I'd give it a shot.

"Posi" or "positive traction", limited slip, etc., are variations on the same theme. Different companies came up with their own name for their product. The posi differential has a clutch set-up to partially tie the two axles together to a certain torque differential, in order to keep the lower-traction wheel from spinning as much as it would otherwise. Some people would argue that a "locker" is a different type of limited slip that should be distinquised from "posi", but I'm not smart enough to say. The other possibility is a "spool", which is a solid mount for the ring gear to the axles - race only, not for street use, please.

Posi is GM's name for a limited slip. Ford and dodge have their own names for it. A true posi uses clutches to hold both wheels until one starts to slip. You can tell a real posi by jacking up the rear end and spinning the wheels. They'll both turn in the same direction. GM also makes a locker type diff. The diff works like an open carrier diff and when jacked up the wheels will turn in oposite directions. Under power when one wheel starts to slip, locking dogs engage and lock the diff. Although this will apply power to both wheels, it's not as strong as a real posi. The best way to tell if you have this type of diff is to pull the cover off and look inside.

My 454SS truck has this type of locking diff and I've had no problems with it. I put over 400 pounds of torque through it and smoke both tires.

Quickest way I would find out is go on a dry highway and see if both tires spin !

if it is a GM posi then it should have a metal tag on one of the bolts holding the rear-end cover on which will tell you it's a posi along with the gear size. If your not the original owner and there is no tag then it could be different gears installed or just a posi added from the previous owner...who knows. All else fails then pull the cover and look on the ring gear for the gear size.
