Floating/loose shifter under hard acceleration, some knocking/popping

I got my 86 IROC with a 350 swap about 2 weeks ago now. I have been fixing it up for inspection, and it should be good to go, but I have also noticed something else that bothers me greatly. Whenever I step on it, the shifter rises up from the tranny and is somewhat loose feeling. Once I step on the clutch, it obviously goes back down until the next gear, where it rises up again. I know that this should not be happening. There is also a slight popping sound on the right hand passenger side near the tranny when going around a corner somewhat hard and under hard acceleration. Are these symptoms of a bad tranny mount? If so, what is the process to replace one and is it difficult/time consuming? Thanks guys, any other ideas are very much appreciated.

Yes. Unbolt the old piece from the tranny at the cross member. Jack up the tail shaft slightly. Remove the old mount, slap in the new. Jacking up the car will require as much time as replacing the mount.

Thanks for your quick reply. I jacked the car up last night and had a look. Sure enough, the rubber had cracked all the way through and with a little force from the jack, it lifted right off from the mount. Replaced it and everything is as firm as can be, no more sounds and no more lifting shifter. Thanks again James!

I'm having the exact same problem as well. I did a search for parts online to see how much it will cost me, coming up with two results so far.. a transmission and engine mount running for around $80 and an "anchor mount" for around $10. Which do I really need? Is it the anchor mount?

I went to my local Autozone and picked up a transmission mount. It attaches at the crossmember that the tranny sits on. The part cost about $9 and took about 30-45 minutes. Grab a transmission mount and you should be all set!

PS. Crawl under your car (supported by jackstands of course) and see if the rubber mount is split in 2. Use a crowbar and stick it between the tranny and the crossmember and pry the tranny upward. If the transmission lifts up off the rubber mount, replace it.

While your there check the bolts holding the torque bar to the transmission....cause with the extra movement , they can back out or loosen up.....you don't have to ask me how I know this.
