Hyd. Clutch trouble

Hi, Guys,
Kinda surprised this isn't in the FAQ, or have I been blinded by hydraulic fluid?

Do I have to replace the whole hydraulic system from master cyl. to slave cyl? Or can I just replace the slave? (Manuals giving me conflicting info)

Better yet, any reason why I can't convert to mechanical linkage from 82-83? Gotta be cheaper, and it sure wouldn't leak anymore!

Hydraulic's are actually less of a pain than mechanical linkage. You can buy one or the other, the problem is that you can not buy the hose in the middle for it. The new style sealed systems (slave, master, hose, and resiviour) from GM actually have the hose molded into the master cylinder.

Replacement of individual components isn't very complicated. They are held in by small pins, all you need is a small punch and a screw driver to pop it out then to install the new one a pair of pliers works good (push the pin in by grabbing the otherside of the housing).

Autozone sells both the hydraulic master cylinders and the slave cylinders. I believe list price on them is somewhere around $60 and the kit is around $120.

If you're serious about converting to mechanical linkage you'll need a new bellhousing, a new clutchfork, clutch cross shaft, and everything in between . All in all you'd have to either get a donor car or find someone who wants to swap out mechanical linkage for hydraulics.

84FTA, thanks for the reply!
You talked me out of mechanical linkage, at least for now, since it's a daily driver.
My leak seems to be coming from the top of the slave cyl. Hope it's not the hose!

If it's leaking there than it is probably the O-ring for the hose. Now you're probably really going to get screwed on that one unless you find a place that will sell you that little rubber O-ring or find one similiar that will fit. You get a new one with a new slave cylinder, however, $60 for an o-ring is expensive

Well, the job's done, and it works!
Once I got the new cyl, and saw how it all went together, I figured it was the o-ring at fault. $60 for an o-ring is a little steep!
So I put the new cylinder in anyway, and I'll hang on to the old one in case this one dies an early death!
84FTA, thanks for the help.
