Back axle oil type?
Back axle oil type?
Guys,
I have just bought a Camaro here in the UK and knew little about it until I found this excellent site
Came someone please tell me what gear oil is required for the back axle. I believe it is an 88 Borg Warner posi variety. From what I have read it requires an oil plus a friction reducer.
What grade oil is it, something like 80W, 90W or a synthetic 75-90W? What is the friction reducer Slick 50?
At the most I'll just be checking the level so I guess I can forget about the friction reducer if the level is about right.
Thanks in advance.

you have the oil right. i use mobil 1 75-90 gear oil. the additive is a lubercant and friction enhanceer, i believe, it's for the clutch disc i nthe posi unit. use gm posi additive. i've heard of people having problems with aftermarket additives.

Thanks Ede,
Most cars I know tend to use 90W oil in the back axle and 80W in the gearbox. I think I'll 'top up' with 90W. There are no GM garages in the UK so I wont be able to get the additive. Any ideas who manufactures it?

a lot of parts stores carry a "house brand" but i've read lot of post on here of people having problems with NON gm brand posi additive. i guess if you can't find it you'd have to use what you can find.
