rear end

I have an 87 ta with a 10 bolt limited slip rear with drums. Can i just swap the stock unit to a posi or do i have to buy a hole posi rear. If i can swap the the stock to a posi with out getting rid of the hole rear how would i go about doing that. Also is it worth it or should i just get a hole posi rear from drum to drum,if i just swap the pumkin will it work and will it last.

thanks for any help

"Posi" and "limited slip" are different names for the same thing. As long as you aren't slipping one wheel, indicating your limited slip posi is worn out, you don't need to replace anything.

Okay, let's try this again. You said:

You then ask if you can change the stock unit (limited slip) "to a posi". Again, they are different names for the same thing.

If you are sure that your differential is "limited slip", but that only one tire turns on a hard take-off, then your "limited slip" posi unit is worn out.

You can do any of the options you mentioned, except anything that involves disassembly of the differential itself is a shop job. If you replace the entire rear end, that is a job you can do yourself.

You can have the posi rebuilt, get a used carrier, or buy an aftermarket part such as an Auburn. The used carrier would probably be less expensive, but the least likely to serve well.

Getting a whole rear end that you put in yourself would probably be the least expensive (especially if you stay with drums), assuming you can find one with gears you like, but would have the same likelihood of not lasting long like a used carrier.

It would be worth it to get your current unit rebuilt, or getting a new carrier.
