One wheel spin w/posi ??????

hey guys, i finally got my 88 formula 5.7 to the 1/4 track in Baytown last friday. After I got those freakin' headers on !!!!My first run she ran 16.43 @ 91.95 with a 60 ft. of 2.83.That was spinning the right tire about an 1/8 of a mile. Dropped my tire pressure down to 20#s,found out that was the wrong thing to do with radails. I made bout 4 runs trying diff. tire pressures. The right rear tire was the only one I could get to spin.(with water or without) Either the track finally came around, or I might have got a pressure right(30#s the both), my last two runs I hooked up a little, and ran a best of 14.44 @ 94.92.That was babying her off the line, with cutout opened, 60 ft. time was 2.02. She weights 3540#s. But even then it was still one wheel spin during the burnout.Right side covered with rubber, left side is clean when I got home.
Anyway my question is.....can a posi wear out? On the street I don't have near the trouble hooking up. But I know the track is diff. than dry clean concrete.I am also running the cheapo Discount Tires 215/60/16's that came on the car. But I sure thought it would hook better than it did. I will be getting better tires maybe 245/50/16, that came on the car new.
Question #2 I am running factory rims with the WS6 pkg. How wide are my rims? I think they are 8" wide.
#3 What is a good street tire than also performs will at the track?
#4 What is the widest tire than will fit on factory rims?
Well that's about 3 more questions than I had planned on asking...
Any help would be really welcomed, especially on the about a posi wearing out.
thanks again.

Re: One wheel spin w/posi ??????

you should have 8 inch rims. The biggest tire you would want to put on would be a 255 50 16. I have heard some people go a little bigger, but a 255 would definately work well for you.

Re: One wheel spin w/posi ??????

It sounds like your posi is wore out either clutch pack or cones depending on the rearend.

BF Goodrich makes a 265 that fits and I had them on my 84 TA, but I wouldn't recommend them. The best thing to do is look at tread width as my Goodyear 245's have a wider tread than the 265's did and hook better as well.

Goodluck, maybe my son and I will see you at Baytown.

Thanks......Pyle Bros. said I had an Australian 9 bolt(I think that's what he called it), when I went there acouple of months age looking for 3.73 gears. They said they could'nt get gears for that rear end anymore?!?
Well maybe they still get parts. I plan on taking it in next week.

Re: One wheel spin w/posi ??????

Same exact thing happened to me, took it to the track only to find out my posi was gone. i had a 9 bolt also, i switched to a 4th gen rear cause i couldnt find any parts for it at a reasonable price, the 9 bolt is a pretty hard thing to find parts for, although in my search i found out a guy named gevo from gevo's rears and gears has access to some parts and www.difsolutions.com sells gears for the 9 bolt although he is rather pricey. And you could always shim it, search for that, there is a nice thread on it. Shimming it could last for a week or for ever, most people have decent results though. In the end though it cost me 200$ to get it shimmed, or 250$ for a new 4th gen rear.
