What happens when a flywheel explodes?

So, you don't think a scatter shield is nessicary? I've recently had a run in with a guy who lost his legs when he was racing and had a flywheel explosion. It almost amazed me that it could even happen. We all know what 6000 rpms is, but do we know how fast that is? This is a little info.

We'll use a performance 14" flywheel to add to the drama.

14" x 3.14 = 43.96" outer circumfrence. This many inches per rotation

6000 r/m, we've just determined one rotation, r was worth 43.96". So...6000 *(43.96"/m) = 263760"/m

Convert it to miles over hours

[263760"/(12*5280)] * 60 =249.773 m/h

Now, imagine the outer shards of steel hitting your bellhousing at 250 MPH. No wonder it's so easy for it to chew through a bellhousing, floor pan and still have something left for your legs.

Back in high school, I knew a guy who had a '69 Z28 (the real thing, with the 302). He put headers on it and crash-boxed the tranny, but otherwise it was just the stock 7000 RPM engine.

He needed a new clutch, and on a whim put a scattershield on while he was at it. He reused the factory flywheel because the surface cracks disappeared after it was refaced.

Two weeks after getting it back together, he missed 3rd on a power shift and spent the next hour picking up clutch and flywheel pieces from the road.

Had he not decided to put on that scattershield, he would have been picking up his feet from the car floor as well.
