700r4 to 200-4r swaps and convertor opnions needed!

Ok, well, in the play book it looks as though i will be putting together either a supercharged or turbocharged 355 into my firebird, besides the obvious, i will need to re build the tranny and get a new convertor.

The car will run NA for some time before the turbo or sc is installed, prob about a year. My question is, the 200-4r's have better ratios then the 700's. they were put behind the 3.8 turbos. They seem to hold up fine to about 450 hp stockish and even more built. i plan on putting some money into building them, such as better clutchs and better bands, etc.

Now, i know they make conversion kits, who makes them and how did they work out? anyone actually do this swap? did you find it worthwhile?

also, i would liek to up the stall convertor also... cuz it wil lbe a street car for sometime, i would prefer to get a lock up type convertor to at least HELP some gas mileage. was thinking somewhere around a 2400-3000rpm stall, what brand should i go with? i def don't got the bucks for a vigilante sooooo

make all suggestions ya want!

never heard of anyone wanting a 200R-4 before! Go with the 700 for a sweet first gear, you may find the 1-2 a bit of a wide ratio but a convertor will help that a bit. 700s are stronger than 200s and there are generally more performance parts available for the 700 for this reason. I believe that the 200 has ratios much like a th350 except for the overdrive gear obviusly

The magazines preach that the 700R4 is Better than the 2004R, NOT TRUE! There are many more 2004R's running in the nines than 7004R's. The lower first gear has no advantage once the car is running better than mid 14's. In comparision tests with a mid 12 second car using the identical torque (same) converter, we ran 7 runs on the 700R4, switched the trans to the 2004R, again 7 runs. Results, the 2004R was a tenth quicker & one mile per hour faster on average. Before the tests we thought the 700R4 would be quicker & the 2004R faster, but the 2004R proved to be better in both cases. I build many of each and have found the 2004R to be more reliable. The gear ratios are as follows, 2004R 2.74-1.57-1.00-.67. The 700R4 3.06-1.63-1.00-.70. The 2004R has three sets of planetary gears, the 700R4 only has two. I would not change to a 2004R if you already have a 700 in the car now. But if you have a choice the 2004R is the better way to go.
Glad Too Help!!!
