28spline rear question
28spline rear question
I have a rear at home with only one axle.
Its a 3:42 with posi and one 28spline axle. The other one cracked in half.
And.....I have the driverside 28spline axle. Would I need to buy the passenger side replacement. Or could I find another 28spline drivers side. In other words are they interchangeable or designated for a certain side?
and.....I was wondering ....could I use just the housing from an old 26spline rear I have sitting at home for this project?

Yes, the housings are the same, just the internals are different, among thirdgen 10-bolts.

I believe the axleshafts are interchangeable per sides; when I had mine out to change my bearings & seals (routine overhaul) I don't remember seeing any difference between the driver's side or passenger side.
There might've been a difference overall between the wheel flange of rear-disk-brake axleshafts and rear-drum-brake axleshafts. I think one flange (where the lug bolts are) was thicker than the other... if that matters for your applications.

OK cool. I just bought a 28spline axle for $30shipped from a guy I know. Do you think the carrier and gears will fit in the 26spline housing?
Arent the axle housings a different shape?

The axles are the same length on each side. A 28 spline carrier will fit in a 26 spline housing.
I almost used my 26 spline carrier when I went to 28 splines. I had the 28 spline side gears but found the hole in the carrier for the 28 spline axles was just a little to small. I drilled it out to 1 1/4" for it to work then found a 28 spline carrier the next day.
Aftermarket 28 spline axles (better than stock axles) for third gen can be found at www.drivetraindirect.com part #KAC7-A7 for $125 each.
