Whining noise comming from rear
I have a bad whining noise comming from where I think is my rearend. I have the stock 3.23 posi rear in my 87IROC and a 700r4 tranny. When i let off the gas at about 2500 rpms in 3rd gear its really loud, and it has gotten progressively louder. I checked the oil in the rear and even added some, but it was full. Checked the trans fluid, also added and its fine. Still have the noise! Is my rear on its way out??? What else could be making this noise? It would really suck if i get stuck on the way to work in the morning. Any ideas would be appreciated! thanks!

Are you sure the gears are stock? richmond gears tend to whine, maybe you gear and pinion angles are messed up, could be U-joints or fuel pump.
Good luck,
Chris

The same thing happened to me, the whine got louder and louder over about a year and it is so bad now that several teeth are chipped and the rear is trashed. It's because the teeth on one side wear down beyond spec for whatever reason and it eventually gets so bad that the gears dont mesh properly anymore. It only happened to me when I let off the gas above 30 MPH or so... It could be something else tho, but this is what happened to me. The good news is that another rear is relatively easy to find. Hopefully this helps.

If it's not too bad yet maybe you could try getting the pinion aligned or something. Hope this helps.

If the noise is loudest on deceleration, as it sounds like it is, it's probably your bearings. If it were any part of the power train it would most likely be loudest when accelerating. There's my two cents worth.

Make that two votes for the bearings. If the teeth on the gears are chipped, usually its the result of a piece of bearing trying to be passed through. Most of the time, the bearings fail, either pinion bearings, or side carrier bearings. You won't be able to see the damage just pulling the cover off (unless there is metal on the magnent) you will have to dissasemble the rear to inspect the bearings and races.
