Rear End Went Out
Rear End Went Out
I got a 87 Trans Am with a 5-spd and posi rear. Tonight on the way home from work I noticed a roaring noise from the rear I pulled off at a gas station and could see fluid driping from the rear housing. Well I got it home and just wondering what it could be. Besides the leak it roars loud when I let the clutch in and on slight acceleration when I driveg it still roars but not as loud, but when I make a turn it very damn loud and also a grinding noise. Any ideas on what it is?? I'm thinking the carrier and side gears and bearings. Maybe even the axel shafts. Do you think maybe the fluid is real low and causing the noise and it's just a seal? If any one has any ideas just let me know as I have no idea what it may be and just curious. Damn way too close to x-mas and I just a 350 in it a couple of months ago. Thanks, Very pissed off. Jason

sounds like a candidate for the.............junkyard! change the gasket, refill it 80w oil with the proper additives from the dealer.just take it easy until you have money.good luck
It sounds like a tooth broken off the ring gear. I did this on my 82 Z28 when I was in high school, and I had to drive it like that for awhile as well. It never completely "went out", but I would take it easy until you get it fixed.
