How do you shift a 4L60 into gear???

That is without making it bump forward when shifting into reverse gear.

Since all other gears including park shift smoothly when manually selected, what is causing this bump or lurch when I select reverse gear?

Would a bad reverse gear boost valve be the problem? If so, where in the trans is it located?

That is most often caused by too high line pressure when reverse is selected. The cause would be the reverse boost valve. It is located on top(?) of the pressure regulator valve in the pump. Major PITA to fix. I would live with it.
