T5 growling in neutral
Both my spare T5 and my dad's T5 are growling when the car is in neutral with the clutch released. Mine also whines in first and second gear. Before we put in my spare, we opened it up and looked at it, but didnt see anything broken or out of place. So what is causing the growling and/or whining? Is the input shaft messed up? Or the main shaft? Thanks.

You sure it's not a bearing? I know for a fact that when bearings are on the way out, they "growl". It is hard to check them by hand because one can't spin them to the operating rpms (unless on a lathe or machine). Just a thought for you and your Dad to ponder.

You sure it is not the motor "growling"? 8^) Last time I heard it, it sounded good. Did you get yours back in, or are you still running the other 350? My 1987 T-5 makes no noise at all, even with 360,000 plus miles.

You heard the stock T5. I broke it at Pomona on the 9th.
I have my spare T5 in there now, and its growling and whining. My dad's stock T5 in his RS is doing the same thing. We've never changed the input shaft bearing, maybe its that?
I still have my dad's 350 in my car right now. Mine is on the engine stand and we're hoping to install it in January. We just converted my dad's RS to TPI, on the stock 305, last week.

I had a BW 5 spd. growl 2 times (in every gear but 4th - it was in the input shaft). the first time was at 9,000 miles (it lasted that long before it started making a noise - no bearings on the input shaft from the factory, or so the Pontiac dealer told me). The second time, at 100,000 miles was due to the bearings on the input shaft giving up the ghost due to lots of crud in the transmission where the shifter boot had cracked (couldn't see it till I took off the inside boot) and allowed road dirt to enter the transmission. Just my 2 cents. When I rebuilt my 81 Z's Muncie 2 years ago it was actually missing bearings (lots of chewed up pieces of bearings and race in the bottom) on the input shaft, but only growled when going into 4th when driven long enough to get hot.
