200C tranny problems
this is on my 82 TA. auto tranny. today i was coming home from relatives. when i went to get off the freeway i was going about 30mph and i felt a bump. my engine temp was at 210. then when i went after the stop, it could not shift out of 1st. after about 1/2 mile it went to 2nd. and then i got home and let it sit for a while and went to drive it because i thought it just might be because it was hot. and it shifted fine when i was easy on the gas. but if i pushed it , it would try to shift out of 1st but it felt like the torque convert. was slipping. the rpm went up, but not like if it were in neutral. could this be the filter. i replaced that and the fluid about 5000 miles ago. or is it that the 200C cant take the torque of my engine. help needed. thanks in advance.

The 200C was somewhat of an underbuilt tranny for the thirdgens. In the mid eighties there were alot of them failing, when I bought my 82 t/a I got some newspaper clippings about there being alot of failures. My t/a had been converted to a TH350 after the original tranny failed. Maybe instead of rebuilding the 200C you should consider a th350 swap.

oh, im getting a 700R4 in about 1 month but i need this to last untill then. but i guess its not. what im going to do right now is replace the filter and fluid and if that doesnt help my dad said it might be the servo. and if thats not it i might just have to have my car sit for a while. thanks for the reply. any other people with ideas on what this could be. thanks in advance

It's just worn out. If you want it to last, let off the gas and let it shift. Your torque converter isn't slipping, its the clutches in the tranny. It doesn't have enough clutch material and/or pressure to shift under engine load. Changing the fluid may help because I'm sure the fluid is burnt. Have fun with the 700r4 swap.

well, i drove it today to show my dad what was wrong and the tranny went out. all i have is 1st gear. if i have it in drive it wont shift at all. and if i let off its like it is in nuetral, but if i give it gas is grabs at 3000 rpms. so i think its fried , im just going to have it sit for a couple weeks (i am crying inside) till i get the 700R4. i dont really want to rebuild one so i am going to buy the one in jegs. its $1197. well. im going to cry some more LOL.
