Rearend rebuild

Has anyone ever rebuilt their 10 bolt themselves? It seems like everyone is afraid to tackel this one (even most shops send them out) and I am wondering if there are some good reasons why. Is it just not worth it or are the tools are too expensive? Any advise?

It's time comsuming setting pinion depth. Shops that rebuild them have special pinion bearings. The bearings have the centers machined out a bit so it doesn't have to be pressed on and off the pinion. It's a trial and error way of setting pinion depth by changing the shim under the bearing so you're constantly assembling and disassembling the gear set until you have the proper wear pattern. Even using a pinion depth guage, you need to set the pinion at least twice.

Usually you can use the same shim that under the bearing right now but like I said. It's trial and error. If the wear pattern isn't right, you need to destroy the bearing to take it off or have some special attachment in a press to remove it.
