how to identify early 1987 700r4 and late 1987

Hi everybody ! I need your help !

I spend almost all day to search for this info with no luck !

Maybe I didn't understand well; I understand that :

There is the 1st design of the 700r4 from 1982 until 1986, then a "crossover" year (1987, start in very late 1986) to finally get a different design in late 1987 that continue in 1988, 1989 etc...

I understand how to make difference between pre 1986 or post 1988, but how to differenciate the early and late 1987 700r4 ?

Also the number I have stamped on the pan rail has no letters... can i be a rebuilt ?

The car is an 1987 and that number is : 86 42 717 – 2
So I'm trying to identify for sure what trans I have...

Sorry to tell this to ya, but there are 18 different types, of internal wiring for the 700r4, so not only do you have to make sure it has a 27 vs 30 tooth input shaft, you have to get the correct wireing a well.

Don't worry ! all inputs are very welcome !

I am so ignorant ! but I find all this very interesting, and I like to understand what I do !

I will check about the 27/30 splines, but I was trying to make sure about my trans because this number is very strange compared to what I found it "should" over the internet.

Again it is : 86 42 71 7 - 2 (my previous post have strange typing)

If anyone can correct me if I am wrong in my undertanding of this ? (1987 = crossover year and how to identify)

Thanks !!!

i thought all 87 700r4s had 30 spline axels.... it was late 86 that they started phasing them out... i have an 87 stock trans and it was rebuilt but i wanna get a higher stall converter im pretty sure all the 87s had 30 spline input shafts

I think your are right, all 187 and up have 30 splines axles, but I read a few post stating that the 1987 still have some pieces in common (parts) with the earlier design and that the later are different, maybe the valve body.

I am still searching !

Re: how to identify early 1987 700r4 and late 1987

All 700R4's from mid 1984 have a 30 spline input shaft. The way to tell the difference from a early 1987 and a late 1987 is to drop the pan and look at the "window area" of the separator at the rear of the valve body in the transmission. The separator plate will have a two letter code on the plate. Early plates use the letter "A" to start the code (AA, AB etc.), late plates start with the letter "B" to start the code (BA, BB etc.), same as the 1988 units.

we are talking about a v-8....correct? the v-6 had 27 spline input in all years.

Didn't the 87 and up have the auxiliary valve body too. That would be the easiest thing to find.

Re: how to identify early 1987 700r4 and late 1987

87zjeff = I am talking about a V8 ! I don't know about the splines on the V6.

Iroc212 = I found that information in my research, "apparently" the auxialiry valve body is a new thing for all 1987 and up, but there are difference between early and late 1987; is it separator plate ?

This is what I am trying to find out ! thanks to the post of Probuilt automatics !
