Rear End Noise

I've noticed that the differential in my 86 Z28 makes a wierd noise when accelerating when making a right turn, I thought I read somewhere that that was caused by the clips on the end of the axles being worn, what do you guys think?

Re: Rear End Noise

If it is a posi rear end then it probably needs the oil changed and a bottle of GM 1052358 additive put in.

Re: Rear End Noise

If it is posi its worn out because only one wheel spins.

Re: Rear End Noise

That is very possible because these cars used the Auburn posi, which doesn't last long. Check for the G80 code on the RPO tag.

Re: Rear End Noise

The car was originally a 2:73 open, but I don't think its that as it spins one tire very easily and runs 2k rpm at 60mph and the tcc is working, So i think it may have 3:42. I'll just have to pull the cover once i got another car to drive.

Re: Rear End Noise

If it's a standard differential then you might have damaged it by doing one wheel burnouts. This is very hard on the differential gears and cross shaft. When you do a burnout like this you are causing the gears inside the differential to turn at very high speeds. The left axle gear is not moving, but the right axle gear is moving at twice the speed of the ring gear. The 2 pinion gears are spinning very fast around the cross shaft and generating a lot of heat. This is enough of a problem, but it gets worse because very little oil can get to these gears when the differential case is spinning. Here is an example of what happens when you do this

Re: Rear End Noise

cool I should just weld it together so both spin since its crap now anyway, its made that noise since i bought the car last april. I'll just use it for now until I find a good posi differential.
