88-89 spline change...

I have an 87 which I believe has a 26 spline. I'm looking for a new rear-end since mine is about to run out the back door. What do I need to do to use a newer rearend. I suppose that would be from just 89-92 right.. Newer rearends are different correct?

i think it was 89 gm went to the 28 spline axles. you could swap carriers and axles and keep the same houseing if you wanted, or swap out the old rear for a "new" replacement.
