Speedo cable and aftermarket gauges... need advice.
I am redoing my in-dash gauges with Autometer ones. My question is about the speedo cable. Stock, it pushes into the rear of the gauge and is held on by a clip. Autometer, it screws into the rear of the gauge.
There is a company in CA that sells cables. They quoted me a price of $50 or so for a new cable, but I am thinking they are thinking that I need one that goes all the way from the gauge to the tranny. But when I look at it, I think I really only need about a 2' piece that will run from the gauge, through the firewall, and screws onto an extension that currently runs to the tranny.
Is this stock? If so (and I assume it is), what is the length of the piece that runs through the firewall? And is it as simple as that, and/or would it make sense to just buy the whole new line from gauge to tranny? I really don't want to have to go under the car in the winter to hook it to the tranny, but that o-ring does leak anyways and needs replacing (maybe the speedo gear too).
What do you all think?

All I can offer is to tell you that the last time I replaced my speedo cable I discovered that certain years had a two piece cable, and others had a single piece cable. My car came stock with a two piece cable with the additional connector in the engine compartment, but when I went to the dealership for a replacement they first offered me a single piece unit. After talking with the parts counter guy for a while he managed to find a two-piece cable for me.
In summary, I have no idea which length this CA company may be offering you, but there definitely are two lengths available from the dealerships.

If your car had cruise control, there will be a cable from the transmission to the cruise unit, and another from there to the speedo. Otherwise you will have a single cable from the transmission to the dash.
