Autposy help on screwed 10 bolt.

I pulled the cover off my my 3.73 posi rear for a routine checkup, and found a ton of gear damage. On 17 ring gear teeth, the outer half of the tooth is broken off. The break looks the same on all 17 teeth.

The pinion has never been taken out of the rear, so it's still at GM spec. The carrier has been changed to a posiunit, with the same ring gear. Backlash is .0075"...within GM spec.

What went wrong?

are you running a 305? i hear they're known for ripping the teeth right off the ring gears. too much torque for the gear to stand up to. try pulling a plug wire and killing off a little power, you'll never miss it.

hard metal failure. richmond gears are stronger. I would guess the gears got hot at some point, and took the temper out.
