Manuel transmission swap
Manuel transmission swap
Hey everyone, i'me very new at working on my Z28 but my mechanic is a thief (he took my money and didn't do hardly any work) so now I need to do all the work myself. I have a 350 block in my 1986 Z28 but I'm not sure what transmission I have in it. It's a five speed and thats all I know. The motor that is in my car is churning about 400 HP but I can't get the power to the rear of the car because of the transmission and clutch. What I need is good suggestions for another five speed that can handle the power and will fit my bell housing. I'll be driving this car regularly so I want a smooth ride but when I put the pedal down I want to impress people. I'm putting a Centerforce DF161056 - Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch and a Hays 10-530 - Hays Performance Flywheel in it so I need compatability without complication since I will be undertaking this task myself. Please help if you can. All suggestions are appreciated.
Also, the trasmission is stock, it's the same 5 speed that came in the car from 1986. Just found out that the transmission is a borg-warner 77mm. I need to find a rebuild kit that will have stronger gears that can handle 400+ hp or have a transmission swap that has few mods to get it to bolt in.

Re: Manuel transmission swap
its a t5, they are weak, but will survive if you done beat on the too much.
options are expensive.
a junkyard t56 from a 93-97 4th gen it a comming swap, its a 6 speed, and requires converison parts, and there is a sticky at the top of the page for this swap. You can still find this trans at a reasonable price.
another option is a tremec tko. they are heavy duty 5 speeds, but are fairly new so they are not available in used/cheaper condition very often. there is actually a tko500 in the classifieds right now if you look for it, probably still on the top page. The swap for this trans costs about 2500 maybe a little more.
they will both pretty much "bolt it" with the proper conversion parts.
